Galtres Parklands Festival has come a long way in 10 years, and continues to go from strength to strength. And, indeed, it has many strengths. For the second year it will be held at Duncombe Park, Helmsley, making for one of the most beautifully scenic festival sites you’re likely to find.

Another strength is its incredible musical diversity, and balance between high-calibre regional acts and bigger name artists that cater for the the casual listener and ardent enthusiast alike: recent years have seen Adam Ant, Reef, The Stranglers, Ash, The Charlatans, Buzzcocks and The Lightning Seeds all headline the main stage, and by selecting established artists with no shortage of hits in their lockers, the festival ensures, well, festival-friendly summer nights a family-friendly vibe.

This year’s festival is no exception, and the headliners The Levellers (Friday), Tricky, Morcheeba (a double-header for Saturday night) and The Human League (Sunday) reflect Galtres’ commitment to diversity. These all sit alongside other notable names such as Bellowhead, The Jim Jones Review, Public Service Broadcasting, John Otway and The Lake Poets.

Bristol indie-electro crossover quintet The Ramona Flowers, eclectic Britpoppers Flipron and authentically rugged rockers The Virginmarys are all worthy of note (and worth checking out), and Hull’s The Holy Orders, one of the highlights of 2013, make a very welcome return.

York and its surrounding area are represented by some quality acts over the three days, too, with ...And the Hangnails guaranteed to dish up some full-on garage-indie rock noise, and We Could be Astronauts are masters of old-school rock riffage with a contemporary twist. Similarly, you won’t go too far wrong with the melodic indie of Bull, the heavy shoegaze psychedelia of Asio’s Eyes, or the quietly intense acoustic work of Joe Solo, and if you’re after something a little more commercial, ‘The Voice’ contestant Beth McCarthy or former Seahorse Chris Helme are unlikely to disappoint. And no Galtres lineup would be complete without hardy perennials Boss Caine and their brand of late-night Americana.

As if boasting such a solid – and deep - lineup over the course of the three nights, Galtres has announced its beer and cider lineup for the August Bank Holiday weekend.

As ever, with both the beer and the food, the emphasis is on the local and the regional, and on quality, with Pocklington’s Brass Castle Brewery, The Bad Seed Brewery of Malton, Pickering’s Cropton Beers and the Great Heck Brewery all being well represented, alongside an almost overwhelming array of other small brewers of quality beers from Yorkshire and around. Ciders and perries are almost as well represented, and there’ll be no shortage of wines (organic, FairTrade, low alcohol, you want it, they’ve got it) on offer either.

There’s also a host of arts, theatre, spoken word and open mic events on over the course of the weekend, and an abundance of children’s activities, ranging from puppet shows and magic to dance workshops and storytelling, there really is something for everyone.

W&H can’t wait to make this their fifth year in attendance... see you there. And if it’s slinging it down, see you in the beer marquee!
