She’s already been pushed by Noisey and Vice Magazine, Nuoli’s new single ‘My Curse Is My Mind’ has been attracting a lot of attention on YouTube… which is no doubt nice for her, but it’s common knowledge that on-line hits rarely correspond with actual sales or the kind of popularity that can lead to a sustainable career.
Nuoli’s bio on Soundcloud reads more like a manifesto:
‘Nuoli is a Stockholm based musician and producer who works hard for the concept of her music to be a political slap in the face against inequality. Her music’s always been a way of expressing a frustration towards political and social issues. Therefore her songs often cover topics and fight against such things as the violence and sexism towards woman, the racism in our society and the harassment towards people who don’t identify themselves as heterosexual or the two stereotype genders, male and female.’
The new single, ‘My Curse is My Mind’ (I often feel that this is true of myself... it won’t let me sleep and has a habit of failing to connect with other human beings on any level in social situations), we’re told ‘presents the inner-battle between the imprisoned person that the society is trying to create and the free person that one really is’. In case there could be any doubt, ‘the song speaks loudly of freedom and letting go of all the bias and preconception. Influenced by musicians such as Kate Bush, Lykke Li, Dream Koala and FKA Twigs, Nuoli has developed her trademark sound consisting of quirky vocals, dreamy drum-beats, airy guitars and haunting synths.’

There’s no doubt about it: ‘My Curse is My Mind’ is everything all the other reviewers have been frothing over: dreamy, haunting, evocative, and on that score, there’s not really anything I can add. It’s pleasant and moving – but it’s definitely not a slap in the face, either sonically or lyrically.
