Our Rating:
What the hell is this? TMZ go disco? As it happens, yes, and without irony. In a massive departure from their most recent LP, ‘Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light on Everything’, the Godspeed! You Black Emperor offshoot offers up a brace of tracks, each radical reworkings of ‘Hang on To Each Other’ from their 2005 release ‘Horses in the Sky’.

‘Any Fucking Thing You Love’ kicks off with a thunderous groove beat and dubby bass that’s not only incredibly uptempo but overtly funky. The Akai snares crackle and pop as the sequenced toms thump and bounce... the vocals are half buried in effect, and while it’s not the TMZ we may be familiar with, it’s utterly captivating in the intense psychedelic drone that builds and twists in a succession of phaser stun whorls of noise. And they blast away at it for a Herculean 11 minutes.

‘Birds Toss Precious Flowers’ is even longer, twisting and shimmering in a psychedelic folk haze that’s underpinned by a spaced-out motorik beat welded to a wandering bassline that’s as dense as they come. It’s a glorious tripped-out groove, the vocals spiralling together in a blissful trance.

I can’t help but think that this what Factory Floor’s album should have sounded like.
