I Am a Man With a St Tropez Tan represents the lighter, softer side of Rick Senley’s musical output, but if the title suggests some kind of club-friendly party album think again. His third album under this moniker – released simultaneously with his third release as Music for Voyeurs – isn’t exactly sweetness and light or a set of bangin’ euphoric trance tunes: far from it, in fact.
However, while much of the album is given to mellow ambience, the tone and texture definitely becomes progressively darker as the album progresses.
‘Terrible Day’ cranks up a fairly unpleasant, fractured grind, with some heavy-duty percussion. ‘Music Box’ has something of a nightmarish quality about it, sampled dialogue crackling through a plinky-plonk music box melody. ‘Auf Berlin’ does thump in with some heavy dance beats at the album’s close, but strewn with samples and a snarling bass, it’s far from upbeat.

What it is, however, is a subtle infusion of light and shade, a crafted and textured album that blends elements of dance and ambient music deftly and to intriguing effect.
