Review: '1982'
'A/B'

-  Label: 'Hubro Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '2nd May 2014'-  Catalogue No: 'HUBROCD2532'

Our Rating:
The anonymous street pictured on the cover looks like it could be a Jandek album. Instead this is the fourth album by a contemporary jazz trio from Norway: Nils Økland (Hardanger fiddles), Sigbjorn Apeland (harmonium)and Øyvind Skarbø (drums).

The imaginary side A is an extended 18 minute improvised Stravinsky style piece accompanied by a wind quintet. The other 4 tracks are shorter tunes performed by the trio. None have titles.

The long work arranged and conducted by Stian Omenås has a pastoral feel; it twists and turns yet has wonderful organic feel.

Økland's violin is the most distinctive instrument on track 2. Other tracks feature prepared piano and wordless vocals.

The musicians may come from a jazz background but, with its spacious textures and extended drones, this album has more in common with an ambient work and it expertly draws the listener into its seamless flow.
