Our Rating:
What IS this? Meltpop, apparently, which according to the press release is more insidious than plunderphonics, rounder around the edges than sound collage and infinitely trickier than a DJ set.’ The entire set is constructed from samples, which in itself is nothing new, but it’s all in the execution. The title therefore isn’t strictly ironic, but beyond ironic in that there’s barely anything recognisable as music here, let alone placable snippets of course material.

The dying seconds of ‘With a lat of verve’ segue into ‘The kind ist qveer’ with a woozy spaced-out rendition of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ that sound’s like the tape’s been chewed in the deck, but that happens before and after that is pretty much anyone’s guess. It begins with a cut-up, spliced and ruined sample that shudders and overlaps and disorientates. Beats crackle and pop. Mellow bleeps and cicadas, irregular loops and brain-bending oscillations make for a fairly difficult and even outright unpleasant listening experience. Multiple time signatures run concurrently, which means it’s like listening to three songs at the same time. Anyone who’s spent time at record fairs will know what that’s like. Everything clashes, horribly. The human brain isn’t designed to cope with such chaos. Sweeping strings in reverse stab through ‘The lady es a tramp’ before ‘Mega deconstructed live wish’ goes all Metallica. With a piano running through the hard riff.

The 16-minute ambient rumbling of ‘Do you have ElP’ makes for a curious finish to a curious album, which is much more fun conceptually than from a listening perspective.
