Review: 'POINO'
'Bon Ick Voyeur'

-  Label: 'Horse Arm'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '23rd June 2014'

Our Rating:
Avant Rock always strikes me as a lazy way of labelling bands that don't fit neatly into a mainstream marketing category. If the genre has any function it is to advise (warn?) you that bands like Poino exist.

They are a post-punk trio from South London and appear to be following a logic of their own design which will leave the majority of listeners bemused and confused. This, I strongly suspect, is one of their chief aims. The threesome seem to go out of their way to be unclassifiable with a highly idiosyncratic approach to song writing.

Led by Gaverick de Vis (ex- Giddy Motors) on guitar and vocals, the closest musical equivalent I can think of is Mark Stewart's dissonant brilliance in The Pop Group.

This is their second album and follows on from the band's similarly angular and room clearing Moan Loose from 2010.

The other two members are John Breenhorn on drums and Ross Blake on bass. Blake also switches to piano for the wrong footing final track Terpsichordia on which de Vis plays violin and viola.

Just when you've become accustomed to the jerky and noisy unpredictability of the previous 7 tracks, this is a quiet six minute instrumental that is simply gorgeous; not an adjective that you would use for the rest of the album

The voice of de Vis is not pretty but is pretty effective at conveying the raging intensity that characterises the songs.

When it comes to drawing any rhyme or reason from titles like Bird Truck, Burnt Birthday and Lazy Biotic your guess is as good as mine.

This is a strikingly original record that needs to be experienced rather than explained.
