Review: 'Campbell, Ruu'
'Heartsong'

-  Album: 'Heartsong'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '25th August 2014'

Our Rating:
What’s immediately striking about the debut album from one-time Leftfield vocalist Ruu Campbell is just how delicate and considered it is. Campbell effortlessly moves between moods, soft and airy verses transition to darker, brooding middle eights in this set of gentle, elegant songs.

‘Crossroads’ has a dark psychedelic edge and forges a quietly claustrophobic atmosphere, while ‘There is a Place’ has an ethereal, almost religious ambience, not to mention strong echoes of Nick Drake.

With mournful strings and fluttering flute overlaying a delicately picked guitar and Campbell’s haunting vocal, closer ‘Crystalline’ is a remarkably powerful and truly captivating song that encapsulates the beautifully ponderous qualities of the album as a whole. A great achievement indeed.
