Review: 'Bearsby, Robert'
'These Are the Good Old Days EP'

-  Label: 'Bear Paw Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk'

Our Rating:
People like a story, especially a heartwarming story of triumph over adversity and winning against the odds. Robert Bearsby has such a story, one that shows the kind of strength and determination and that wins admiration. August 2012 and Bearsby was penniless in Australia. With no money, Bearsby had no means of funding his return to England, and while, as he recounts, he wasn’t scared about sleeping rough, but did need to eat. And so he picked up his guitar and sang on the streets. Within three months, he’d raised the funds to get home. Impressive stuff.

Even more impressive is that the savvy busker is now getting national radio play and a whole heap of acclaim. It’s not exactly hard to understand why, either, listening to this EP.

‘Trying to Get Home’ tells this story, and it’s a powerful anthem of a track, Bearsby’s gritty, soulful voice backed by stirring strings and a full band alongside his trusty acoustic guitar. Bearsby sounds older than his 24 years, but that’s definitely a compliment.

‘Home is where the heart is,’ he croons on ‘It’s a Long Stretch ‘Till Sunrise Sweetheart’, and cliché as it may be, when Bearsby sings it, you actually believe him. If some of the songs sound very like standard singer-songwriter fare, there’s a sincerity about Bearsby that resonates, and just listening to him, it’s clear he’s singing from the heart.
