Review: 'BITCHIN BAJAS'
'Bitchin Bajas'

-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '25th August 2014'

Our Rating:
You can't dance to Bitchin' Bajas, in fact you can't do much other than nod appreciatively or fidget nervously.

Track one (Tilang) lasts 18:39 mins to give notice that this is not an album to put on if you're in a hurry to be somewhere. This is the longest track but is representative of the whole 76 minutes in that it meanders and oscillates in a circular manner that will either entrance or infuriate depending on your schedule.

The trio from Chicago specialise in drone-based ragas. Their analogue sound uses 'real' instruments which include organ, flutes, xylophone, autoharp and a 1" 8-track tape machine.

Strings, keys, guitar and field recordings also figure at various points. Check out the gurgling water and birdsong effects on Field Study.

Those drifting along on an astral plane will be woken uo by track 6 - Bueu which briefly bursts into life 8 minutes into the 12 minute duration after lulling the listener with some mellow saxophone patterns. The finale has a Tangerine Dream-like pulse.

This turns out to be only a temporary deviation from what Drag City calls BB's "tranquil essence". If you skip this track you can safely set your controls for the heart of the sofa.

It's hard to pick highlights from what is essentially the sonic equivalent of holistic medicine i.e. it works on the whole mind, body and spirit or not at all.
