Review: 'HOT SEATS, THE'
'Grandad's Favorite'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '1st August 2014'

Our Rating:
The Hot Seats are a rowdy banjo-busting, fiddle-toting quintet from Richmond, Virginia who play a frenetic mix of Bluegrass, Ragtime and Appalachian Folk.

The album whips up a storm with opener Old Jawbone, a public domain tune dating back to 1929, and there's barely a pause for breath thereafter.

The tunes are from all over the place and old time classics are performed like they were written yesterday. One has the priceless title: Hog Went Through The Fence, Yoke And All.

Guest fiddler Lars Prillarman taught the band the instrumental title track and plays on this and three other tunes.

Of the Kentucky instrumental Snakewinder, the band's liner notes say "There's only one way to play it, according to us. FAST!" and they stay true to this tempo on all the 14 tracks. Had It, Lost It is the only one that runs for more than four minutes.

They've played everywhere from redneck bars to Celtic Connections and on this showing it's a safe bet to say they could get even the most lifeless joint jumping.

Stick to the end for Jimmy Sutton and you'll also be treated to some sheep imitations; not something many records can boast of.
