Our Rating:
They’re all about the wacky are these guys. Like you needed me to tell you that because their name and the album’s title isn’t enough of a giveaway. The song titles, too, tell you much of what you need to know: ‘Soy Milk’, ‘Our Dig’. ‘Snow!’, ‘Cheese’. The ordinary, the everyday, the mundane, these are the things that are grist to their mill of mirth. Then of course there are the things that are quirky, absurd, surreal: ‘Jellyspoons’, ‘My Mysterious Uncle’, ‘The Land Hermit Crab’. Isn’t the world weird and wonderful if viewed from a certain perspective, if you peer a little bit closer?

Pitched as an amalgam of the Bonzo Dog band, Vic Reeves and The Divine Comedy, the off-beat quartet’s third album is a moustache-twizzlingly eccentric example of chaprock, or orchestral nerd-indie. Or something. Buoyant knees-up theatrical folk and oompah music provide the musical framework for their lyrical tomfoolery. ‘Tweed Jacket’ is a slushy rock ‘n’ roll era slow dance, and its absurdity is evidently intended to be key to its appeal.

At times it feels like they’re trying a little too hard to be ‘zany’ and all that jazz, but the wit and standard of musicianship makes this effort daft but for the most part enjoyable.
