West Yorkshire 5-piece Allusondrugs may broadly fit the ‘grunge’ category, but what makes them stand apart and rather special is their knack for decent songs and infectious hooks.
‘I Should Have Gone to Uni’– penned by guitarist Damo Hughes as he reflected on his own life while friends went off to university and settled into family life – is a classic example. It’s dominated by a thunderous low-slung bassline and crackling dense guitar, but for all its dark reflection, it also boasts a super-catchy chorus and some breezy backing vocals. Sue, there’s an inevitable nod to Nirvana, but equally The Pixies and Ash, making this a guitar-driven alt-rock classic of the instant variety.
