Their claim to be ‘More Metal than the Devil’ isn’t something I’d challenge them on. With satanic evocations and goats slain hither and thither, Hanzel Und Gretyl may reference the Brothers Grimm but plunge into the woods in search of something much more sinister than granny’s house. And to be clear, you shouldn’t confuse Black Forest Metal with Black Forest Gateau, either.
Casting off the dubious trappings of their previous album, this is all about occult ritualism and a hellish vortex of noise. It’s very black and it’s very metal, the guttural sound of demonic fury. The guitars are aflame and burn hot enough to strip the skin from your frail mortal bones. Feel the pain as the vortices of hell drag you nearer. Be afraid.
