Review: 'Shield Patterns'
'Violet EP'

-  Label: 'Gizeh Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '9th March 2015'

Our Rating:
This latest EP from Shield Patterns, the collaborative project between Richard Knox (Glissando plus myriad other collaborations and projects) and singer Claire Brentnall, represents a clear continuity from their 2014 album, ‘Contour Lines’, in that it’s atmospheric, spare, and evocative. At the same time, it also signifies a progression. Without losing the delicate, understated approach to composition and arrangement, and retaining the meticulous attention to subtle detail, there’s an air of growing confidence about the songs here.

Brentnall’s haunting vocals, which invite favourable comparisons to Kate Bush, swoop and flutter above sparse, stark, minimalist electro backing. There’s an organic feel to the whirring industrial rhythms and hovering drones. ‘Monument’ is the standout in what is, without question, a strong set, and Shield patterns continue to forge their own singular and impressive path.
