Review: 'Marreck'
'Cetology'

-  Album: 'Cetology' -  Label: 'Nute Records'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: 'February 2015'-  Catalogue No: 'NUTE021'

Our Rating:
The press release does at least give fair warning that Marreck is inspired ‘by a lethal cocktail of Drexciya, Swans, Jung, and Moby Dick’ and that ‘Cetology’ is ‘an album of exploding audio blubber, making a mess of both outer and inner space in the process’. I braced myself before hitting play, and it’s a good job I did, because ‘Cetology’ is one hell of a ride.

Rapidfire synthetic beats pulse against a trilling mid-range multi-tonal throb on ‘Folio’, getting the album off to a trippy start as the rhythms drift in and out of sync with one another. It soon begins to transition away from these more accessible grooves and builds an altogether more aggressive sonic attack.

The frequencies scream toward the treble ranges, metallic-edges serrations hammer against your cranium from within. ‘Duedecimo’ is built around an insistent thudding bass beat that pulsates low and hard, just below the distortion level as a swell of noise swirls around it to create a dense mass of sound.

It’s a challenging work, for sure, but Merreck proves to be adept at changing pace and tone at precisely the point at which things threaten to become all too much, making ‘Cetology’ a work that offers more than mere sonic aggravation.
