Review: 'NUBIYAN TWIST'
'Nubiyan Twist'

-  Label: 'Wormfood Records'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '30th March 2015'

Our Rating:
Nubiyan Twist formed in Leeds though are now based in London. They boast twelve members and specialise in scratchy groove orientated dance music with a substantial brass section.

The name comes from female vocalist Nubiya Brandon and they list their influences as Herbie Hancock, King Tubby, J Dill and Fela Kuti. As you might expect, their sound is a rich and varied fusion of cool jazz, dub-reggae afro-beat and scratchy hip-hop'.

Their debut features seven tracks, which includes two versions of Hypnotised. One line from this track states "repetition is our ammunition" and this is a formula which translates into a very smooth production with a muted carnivalesque feel.

The level of sophistication and musical expertise is very polished but the absence of any rough edges means that beyond the shiny surface there's little in the way of raw power to really get the adrenaline pumping.
