Review: 'Cotton Claw'
'Volutes'

-  Album: 'Volutes'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '20th April 2015'

Our Rating:
The name Cotton Claw could be read a number of ways: something sharp rendered soft, or a strangely surreal juxtaposition suggestive of something that simply shouldn’t work and had no means of performing its intended function. Elements of both inform this at times weird and woozy take on chilled-out, taut-groove dance music as made by this collective endeavour which sees four acclaimed French producers (Lilea Narrative, Zo aka La Chauve-Souris, YoggyOne and Zerolex) come together for their first full-length album.

‘Fluffy, granular, elegant, dense, intense, powerful and bright’ are adjectives that feature in the press release, and its fair to say that ‘Volutes’ witnesses Cotton Claw conjuring sounds that fit all of these and more to create something that genuinely stands out as being innovative and different.

With some bumping beats and spaced-out synth strikes and washes defining the sound, the basslines are neatly understated. Given the number of hands on deck(s), it’s remarkable just how subtle everything is, and how well the album hangs together.
