Review: 'Oh Sister'
'Watch the Water (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Folk'

Our Rating:
Things are looking good for Oh Sister right now: she (that’s Sarah Berresford) and her band played a sold out EP launch show at Powerlunches recently; she’s been praised by a slew of publications from ‘Communion’ to ‘The Independent’, and she’s also been made a recent Fresh Fave on ‘Fresh on the Net’. With airplay on BBC London Amazing Radio, she couldn’t have timed the release of ‘For the Dales’ as a lead single for her debut EP.

It’s a subtle and understated track, which intelligently infuses a delicate folk song with a contemporary electronic drum and a bassline that adds drive without dominating or detracting from the poised atmosphere. As such, it’s representative of the EP as a whole. As much as her focus on crafted lyrics, the picked guitar work shows her appreciation of Leonard Cohen.

The sequenced bass throb – almost subliminal in the mix – adds a depth to her delicate delivery on ‘Only Nature’, and taken as a whole, the EP is a rare balance of innovation and classic songwriting which is genuinely refreshing.
