Wild flamenco and bold brass blast out of samples, scratches and thumping hip-hop beats on ‘Have a Lookout’. Yes, really. What is it these guys been smokid? They must get some pretty potent stuff in Bordeeaux. What, these dudes are French? It just gets stranger.
The other three tracks, which feature US rapper Blake Worrell, all incorporate similar elements to create a pretty crazy cocktail. ‘Somehow’ is a drug-referencing slice of low-down urban jazz: it’s like the ghost of William Burroughs molesting Tom Waits and the Wu-Tang in a Chigago back alley, while ‘Smokid Inc’ sounds like Louie Armstrong in a time machine.
The whole deal isn’t necessarily entirely successful, but you gotta hand it to them for conjuring something a bit different.
