Review: 'Counting Coins'
'Don't Look Down'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '1st October 2015'

Our Rating:
Usually, when I hear or read someone insisting that to really appreciate a band, you have to see them live, I’m inclined to sniff, shrug and think ‘yeah, whatever’. Not because I don’t think that the live medium carries the most immediacy, and where the performance is integral to what a band are about, it’s hard to deny that there’s a lot to be said for seeing bands live. But it isn’t always possible, and that’s a major reason why recordings exist. As such, if the recordings fail to capture the band’s true energy, they should so something about it. Still, there’s always an exception to the rule, and Counting Coins hardly sound deficient in the studio.

‘Don’t Look Down’ is a lively piece of brass-heavy pirate gypsy folk-punk. Featuring Robin Leitch, (Random Hand) & Pat Pretorius (The Talks), it’s three minutes of boisterous ska that’s as catchy as you like.

But, having witnessed this Hull act performing, I can attest to their ability to whip a boozed-up crowd in to a manic frenzy, leading a riotous knees-up of a time. And that atmosphere isn’t something you can recreate in the studio. They’ve come pretty close, though.
