I always maintain a familiarity with the original is beneficial in appreciating the quality of a remix. Perhaps this is one of the exceptions which proves the rule. The 19 tracks – and there’s a fair amount of duplication here, with no fewer than three versions of ‘Night Safari’ and two apiece of ‘Honey’ and ‘Fall’ – all fall broadly into the territory of mellowed-out electro groove. I have a hunch the spirit and fundamental style of the original versions has been retained, and it’s fair to say that on balance, it’s a remix album that stands on its own merits.
And yes, while at times woozy and a little bit fuzzy, weirdy, soft-focus, with dashes or world music infused here and there, there simply isn’t anything particularly interesting on offer here.
