Review: 'Dan Baird & Homemade Sin'
'Live at Bush Hall Shepherds Bush.'

-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '6.11.15.'

Our Rating:
Yes Dan Baird and Homemade Sin are back at the Bush Hall as part of the bands annual European tour this time to promote the new album Get Loud the band's first album recorded using pro-tools dropboxes and other modern geegaws that made Dan get over some of his technophobia and don't worry it's not a techno record and they haven't discovered auto-tune either.

Still as expected the Bush Hall was packed and gave the current line-up of Homemade Sin the welcome they deserve as Dan explained that he was going to let Mauro Magellan start the first two songs before they laid into the opening number that I think was new song but not sure which one it sounded great and Warner Hodges first solo of the evening was just country enough with some good twang too it.

A little Bad Luck was the next new song to get the place going and had Micke Nilsson throwing a look or two at Dan as they roared through it. Crooked Smile was the first classic of the evening and most of the audience sang along as they blasted through it and Warner flipped his guitar over his shoulder a couple of times.

Sheila went down a storm as it always does even as they seemed to extend the instrumental break a bit which with a band that is so effortlessly both tight and loose at the same time seemed totally natural. Then it was back to the new album for a nice version of Don't Be Wasting My Time that just sounds like a classic Dan Baird song a little bit bitter and twisted but with some glorious guitar playing to get all the feelings across.

Miracle Of Love brought big smiles to a lot of faces in the crowd and a huge sing along to go with it. They then did a long intro as if they didn't know what to play before it turned into a nifty version of Little Darlin' that had some good lusty guitar work from Warner and Dan and to make sure they didn't get out of hand they followed it with Keep Your Hands To Yourself that of course sounded stunningly great.

I really wish the next new song they played was actually called The Last Traffic Light that is it's opening line but no it's really Silver Little Lies a great sounding song of slightly bitter regret wrapped up in some superlative guitar parts and the sort of Bass rumble that should make us all sit up and listen. They then decided it was time to Fall Apart On Me again and it almost sounded like they were trying to fall apart musically but these guys really are far too together to do that!!

They then had a long slow quiet intro into Two for Tuesday that then just kicked off as Dan started to sing about how he was driving through America and would be saved by hearing some CCR on the radio about two thirds of the way through they shifted the song into Proud Mary as if it should always sound like this damn everyone loved that.

I'm guessing the next song was World Gone Wrong the song didn't mind and sounded pretty great as did a super fierce version of Promises that went by in a bit of a blur.

Then things went wrong as Dan couldn't remember the opening line to the next song and even asking the Danoraks and Scanoraks to tell him the opening line didn't seem to work so we had a bit of a pause after the false start while they figured out what the opening words were and what kind of Golden Rule Dan was breaking. To make sure Dan's memory could recover and he had no more senior moments they played Country Black which is the only instrumental on the new album and it had a sort of Link Wray goes honky tonk country feel to it.

Mon Cheri had them firing on all cylinders before they started to claim they had Nothing Left To Lose as if they'd ever be that down. Or I'd ever struggle to figure out what a couple of songs were but I do anyway hearing Dan sing about how much he loves you is always cool before they nailed Let's Talk About Love and closed with a long and gritty version of Railroad Steel during which Warner managed to break a string.

Yes of course we went nuts for an encore and they came back out and after waiting for Warner to tune the new string and cut its end off we got a good long version of Ain't A Damn Thing To Be Done before they finished with a great cover of Going Down the road Feeling Bad that must have been loads better than the original as it was not only listenable but damn great too which would not have been my reaction to hearing the Grateful Dead playing it.

Yes once again a great show from Dan Baird & Homemade Sin a real not to be missed great live band can't wait to see them again next year!!
