Review: 'Asfast / Kutin'
'Split'

-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '1st December 2015'-  Catalogue No: 'V003'

Our Rating:
Two Vienna-based producers feature alongside one another on this release. Beyond being instrumental and electronic, classification isn’t easy.

On his three tracks, Asfast – the working name of Leon Leader – shows an ear for detail, and for mood, operating in the spaces between darkness and light.

‘Cocooning’ builds dark, sonorous soundscapes, with heavy reverb and repetition transforming ordinary, organic sounds into strange, mysterious abstractions, slow, deliberate rhythms building amidst a growing swell of crackling thunder. ‘Fracture // Separation’ is reminiscent of Prurient, and contrasts levity with a creeping uncertainty, soft, sweeping synths drifting over dank rumblings. The throbbing darkness of ‘Mouth and Chance’ is also overlaid with sonorous synth eddies and rent with sparse distant, echo-drenched percussion.

Kutin’s brand of stark electronica keenly compliments Asfast’s work. There’s a majesty in the brooding ‘How to Inhale Water’, the dense low-end and slow rhythm. The scronking bleepfest of ‘Quidlibet’ contrasts with the rest of the set, bringing the dance elements only vaguely alluded to in ‘Cymk’ to the fore and then thrashing them into a microtonal assault.
