Review: 'Affairs'
'Play'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '26th February 2016'

Our Rating:
I happen to have caught Affairs live in Spring of 2014, and it was clear then they had a certain something. But then, I could also see how they may be divisive.

Singer James Robinson has a crooning tone that’s lodged in his throat and has an obvious hint of Morrissey about it, but without the nasal twang. ‘Play’ calls to mind Wild Beasts in its mesmeric combination of drifting synth, chiming guitar and theatricality, but it’s powered on by some propulsive drumming and is all over in a mere two minutes and thirty-seven seconds, making it a succinct slice of dreamy pop with an unexpected energy.

If you can get past the vocals, Ed Buller’s production is vast, and it’s got real potential to see the band break through. The press attention and radio play they’ve already received suggests it really could happen.
