Review: 'Atkin, James'
'Love Blind'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '11th of March 2016'

Our Rating:
James Atkin of EMF is back? Unbelievable! I’m not going to be the last journo to make that gag, and there’s no way in the world I’m the first. Perhaps more incredible is that now aged 46, he seems to be sporting the same kind of getup as in the wild days of the early 90s.

But enough scoffing: EMF may be remembered for their brand of bratty, trashy pop that was in so many ways of its time, but they did it all with energy and enthusiasm. Moreover, they knew how to carve out a hook, and singles like ‘Getting Through’ showed more depth than they’re usually given credit for.

Atkin didn’t do too badly in terms of commercial success working with Bentley Rhythm Ace, either. And on to 2015, and Atkin’s debut solo album, from which ‘Love Blind’ is lifted. And it’s not bad.

Actually, it whips together a laid-back groove in the musical backing with elements of early Depeche Mode, Electronic and Talk Talk giving something for Atkin’s easy-going vocals. As a piece of upbeat pop, it’s more than mere fluff. It’s got charm, and shows Atkin has still got it.
