Review: 'Virgin Suicide'
'Virgin Suicide'

-  Album: 'Virgin Suicide' -  Label: 'Nordic Music Society / Membran'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '1st April 2016'

Our Rating:
They may hail from Denmark, but Virgin Suicide have a thing for British indie of the 80s and 90s jangly variety, and 60s pop. ‘Sedate Me’ demonstrates that the two guitarists have both closely obseved Johnny Marr’s style, and replicate it nicely here. But equally, you can throw in comparisons to the Postcards Records sound and spirit of the Sarah Records bands, and there are some sunny, Byrds-like harmonies: the introduction to ‘2nd Wave’ has echoes of their version of ‘Hey Mr Tambourine Man’, with a bit of The Primitives thrown into the mix. It’s not all jangle, and there are some sturdy basslines, nicely accentuated by a full production sound.

‘There’s a Glace Over My Eyes’ comes on all like a Suede ballad (specifically, ‘The Beautiful Ones’), the vocals drifting in a sea of soft-focus reverb and singing of doomed romance. Going more uptempo, there are some glammy drums and again, if they’re going for a Smiths style sound, it’s very much through a Suede filter. But then, My Girl’ sounds like ‘Automatic’ era Jesus and Mary Chain.

It’s ok, and there are some nice tunes, but it does feel very studied, and as such, a shade derivative.
