Review: 'HARTY, JOSH'
'Holding On'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '8th April 2016'

Our Rating:
As befitting a man who spends a fair proportion of his life on the road, the subjects this singer songwriter from North Dakota deals with consist largely of people in motion - driving, roaming and running.

The title track is all about maintaining the strength and desire to keep going even when things get to seem routine and predictable. In this context, Holding On is as important as moving on.

The ten tunes on this Kickstarter funded album were recorded live with a full band in Wisconsin in the same sequence that you hear on the album. The aim to keep things fresh and direct is accomplished even though the material is fairly derivative.

His acoustic guitar style is modelled in part on Mark Knopfler and his silky singing voice is reminiscent of Gordon Lightfoot or Jim Croce.

In fairness, Harty does not set himself up as an original. His music is founded on solid folk-country traditions and if its safe, radio-friendly Americana you're looking for this will fit the bill.
