Review: 'FRANKIE COSMOS'
'Next Thing'

-  Label: 'Bayonet Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '1st April 2016'

Our Rating:
Frankie Cosmos is not a person but a band from New York City. However, it is really the voice of Greta Kline, a "kid with a guitar" and daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates.

The fifteen short songs on her debut full length release are clearly informed by the anti-folk scene. In other words, they are modest vignettes that can be enjoyed on their own terms or seen as symbolic of a bigger picture.

On the other hand, her wry observations on the minutiae of daily life may not actually stand for anything larger at all because needing sleep, feeling sinister or wondering what difference having a pet dog might make are just tiny dots in the infinite cosmos.

On Outside With The Cuties Kline confesses "I haven't finished this song yet" and appeals for ideas ("Will you help me fix it?").

This album stands or falls on whether you regard such self deprecating asides as an example of refreshing honesty or false modesty to win over naysayers.

Personally, I'm prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt as she doesn't seems to be an artist with a bloated ego. The downside to her bashfulness, however, is that the songs don't have enough depth to be anything more than charmingly quirky.
