Our Rating:
Sugardrum is Nigel Bunner, a London-based storyteller who writes and sings gentle acoustic tunes based on musings and observations from his everyday life.

First editions of his debut full-length CD come with a 90 page book of Postcard Stories that expand on the themes of the songs which in turn touch upon the difficulty of finding the right words to share our feelings.

The threat of loneliness never seems far away. For instance, "Here we are on our own", is the plaintive refrain on Poppies.

Unfortunately, though, tracks like Bubble Clouds and Motorway Song steer the Sugardrum craft perilously close to the territory of twee folk. The latter song adopts a childlike perspective on the environment in singing of little cars on little roads which then shake and struggle on big roads and in big cities.

In a similar faux-naive vein, True Nature Of Cats imagines a cat reining in its instincts to hunt goldfish and birds.

Despite its title, Choccy Rolls takes a weightier line with reflections on the wandering mind of a woman suffering from dementia.

Overall, Bunner's soft personable voice and crisp fingerpicking style, backed by some fine cello playing, make this music easy on the ear.

However, the drawback to his soft, laid back style is that there is too little to engage with at a deeper level. A nice record but not a lot more.
