Review: 'Spins, The'
'Colours (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '28th June 2016'

Our Rating:
The five members of The Spins have a diverse range of backgrounds, and a wealth of experience. The artists they’ve worked with between them is more than just a bit impressive. But as is often the case when session and backing musicians come to the fore, or otherwise a collective of experienced musicians who’ve achieved success in their own right collaborate, there’s some spark lacking from the material. Maybe it’s the democratic process: either any dynamic edge is smoothed out through negotiation, or the players are too preoccupied with their credentials of musicianship to cut loose with the creativity. Whatever, none of this explains the abysmal cover art.

‘Hole in the Ground’ lays a cool, jazz-infused groove of the kind that Jools Holland is likely to go nuts for. Cue chin-stroking critical acclaim and Mercury nominations and all the rest. The song evolves into an unusual but well-executed jazz-rock hybrid with a clearly defined and catchy enough chorus. Amy Danielle’s vocals work well with the material: that is to say, musically proficient but emotionally undemanding and lacking a strong sense of personality or individuality.

The EP’s title track, ‘Colours’ is an uptempo radio-friendly rock tune, the likes of which were ubiquitous in the 80s. Combining murky 80s electro and some post-punk poptones ‘I Wish You’ and ‘Inertia’ both begin promisingly, before descending into mediocre retro- rock territory. I must stress that they’re not a band tunes, but are just hugely generic, and sound like they could have featured on an 80s teen movie now forgotten and consigned to the dustbin of history along with the VHS tape it was released on. So, personally, I don’t dislike this – well, apart from the jaunty No Doubty Britpop closer, ‘Never Let it Go’ – but really struggle to find anything to justify recommending it.
