Amy’s resumé tells of how her music draws on traditional English and American folk, jazz and contemporary folk / rock pop. This effectively places her in the same bracket as an almost infinite number of new and established singer/songwriters, many of whom are extremely talented, many of whom have no shortage of pretty well-crafted songs, but few of whom will ever break through. Part of the problem of drawing on such a broad range of styles is that the end results are diluted and bland.
For the most part, Amy’s songs are examples of subtle, hushed contemporary folk. But she does have one or two tricks which elevate her above the ordinary. ‘Belief in Nothingness’ finds her multi-tracked vocal sounding very like Maddie Pryor, while the title track is sparse acoustic-led song, Amy’s voice traces its way delicately though the understated arrangement. There’s a decidedly Mark Knopfler guitar break in the middle, before Amy comes on a bit Florence Welch.
