Review: 'LAS KELLIES'
'Friends & Lovers'

-  Label: 'Fire'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '14th October 2016'

Our Rating:
Las Kellies formed in Argentina in 2005 and this is their fourth album. Close your eyes and you could be back in the Hacienda watching ESG play live, or maybe even ACR.

Even the album cover artwork doffs its cap to New Order (Power, Corruption & Lies). 'Sugar Beat' has that classic 'white funk' sound. 'Tied To A Chain' has a Mondays' lurching swagger about it and you can certainly hear the 'era' and 'sounds' this work has been influenced by. 'Make It Real' also introduces a bit of 'shoegaze' into the equation.

The other 'sound' that would seem to be part of their sonic palette is a healthy dose of dub and producer Ivan Diaz Mathe probably has a lot to do with that having previously worked with Lee "Scratch" Perry and Mad Professor and also Las Kellies on recent material.

The sound has been filled out nicely in that respect. It's possible this album might be a bit thin and weedy without it. Of the other tracks, they are all pretty good with a nice punk edge: e.g. chant style vocals. Other standouts for me are 'Sun Goes Down' which has a nice attack on the riff, 'Sundays' for its dreamy quality and 'Celebrate Life' which rounds the album off with a bit of a boogie.

If I was to be critical the album never quite hits the heights of the opening track but it's a damn fine effort nevertheless.
