They’ve been knocking around since 2012, but 2016 was something of a breakthrough year for Kilkovec, with their ‘Name Your Place’ EP scoring positive reviews and backing from Edith Bowman. This eight tracker packs plenty of energy. There are some chunky, driving riffs and the rhythm section is both tight and weighty. ‘Somerset Cottage’ is a real standout, balancing perfectly weight and guts with melody, all cemented with a strong chorus.
Breaking away from the straightforward job of making songs, ‘Constructive Criticism’ is experimental interlude which prefaces the grunge-goth of ‘Go On’
While contemporaries like Marmozets, Brand New and Letlive may be obvious points of comparison for some, for my money, Kilkovec exist in the same domain as bands like Bivouac and post-grunge acts of a more 90s vintage.
