'Run With The Hunted'

-  Album: 'Run With The Hunted' -  Label: 'Southern Lord'
-  Genre: 'Thrash Metal' -  Release Date: '28th April 2017'

Our Rating:
‘Run With the Hunted’ finds Wolfbrigade, some 22 years on from their formation, still delivering snarling, ferocious crust punk with some serious velocity. It doesn’t exactly spring any surprises, but then, what would that achieve? No-one is going to come to this album expecting wild experimentalism or tracks which work a span of genres. There’s no foray into pop or r’n’b, no mid-album slowie or slow-building prog post-metal closer. This is ten track packed tightly together and forged using dense, driving guitars.

‘Lucid Monomania’ comes on like Mötörhead on even more speed than usual, Micke barking the lyrics while behind him, the drums crash at a hundred and fifty mils an hour and the guitars just crush, and of course, everything is louder than everything else. It’s entirely representative. For a band looking to ‘push the melodic strains even further’, there’s a lot more strain than melody.

The closest they get to a commercial breakdown is on the unexpectedly accessibly Celtic jig of ‘Kallocain,’ which stands out a mile by virtue of its lightness and melody, but it’s all relative of course: we’re hardly in Ed Shearan territory here. And of course, after tis mid-album detour, it’s immediately back to business as usual with the grinding, full-throttle fury of the nihilistic ‘Return to None’, and from thereon in ‘Run With The Hunted’ is relentless in its savagery.
