Review: '…And the Hangnails / Snakerattlers'
'The Crescent, York, 3rd June 2017'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
It’s a trio of duos on the bill curated to mark the official launch of ‘DOG,’ the fourth album by …And the Hangnails, and on one of the hottest nights of the year do far, it’s sweltering in The Crescent. It’s a good thing the beer’s cheap (and also very good).

Washing Machine Repair Men kick out their rambunctious sociopolitical stompers to an appreciative audience. For my money, they were perhaps better at The Fulford Arms the other week, but they get plenty of laughs in all the right places and look like they’re enjoying themselves as they whoop and holler their rabble-rousing slogans.

Snakerattlers, comprising husband / wife pairing of Dan and Naomi Gott, may be relatively new on the scene as a band, but they’re old hands, having previously been two thirds of raucous garage punk trio The Franceens who called it a day in January. In this incarnation, they’re all about the badass, blued-based old-school rock ‘n’ roll action. Theirs is a minimalist set-up: Naomi stands at a three-piece drum kit and nonchalantly batters out solid rhythms while Dan croons and hollers and ranks out reverby rockabilly riffs with unstinting ferocity. With their own album launch just around the corner, things are looking good for them.

It’s hard to fault …And the Hangnails. Ever. They’ve got their sound and style nailed, and with ‘Dog’, which benefits from a more sophisticated production without diminishing the raw energy that permeates every inch of their songs, they’ve delivered an album bursting with hooky grungey garage pop tunes. Having seen them play more times than I can remember and having never one left feeling disappointed, it’s also a fact rather than an opinion that they’re one of the most consistent live acts around.

The video promoting the new album is being projected on a loop onto the wall opposite the bar, and the dark, clammy venue is bubbling with a sense of occasion. But what actually proves to be the best thing about it is that …And the Hangnails just get down to business when they’re on stage. No heavy plugs or hard sell, no pissing about with anything fancy.

Tonight’s set showcases cuts from the new album, but not at the expense of the overall balance of the set, which features plenty of old favourites, not least of all ‘Everybody’s Luck’ and ‘Fear Only Fear’ (without which no set would be complete). By three songs in and there’s some enthusiastic moshing and crazy dancing going off down the front.

The pair of them are pouring sweat and clearly the heat’s hammering them, but they don’t let up for a second – and don’t even leave the stage before delivering the encore the crowd are chanting for. Respect.
