Review: 'Quiet Boy'
'Earwig (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: '2nd June 2017'

Our Rating:
It’s pitched as being ‘like if Scott Walker were to soundtrack Stranger Things’, and yes, Walker’s haunting otherness is certainly a touchstone here. But equally, Quiet Boy’s semi-abstract compositions are imbued with a rich soulfulness which places them into an entirely different musical field.

The four tracks on ‘Earwig’ showcase a subtle, considered style of songwriting rendered with an understated execution.

‘Redeem’ introduces the EP with a shuffling beat and a smooth, mellow groove that’s ripped up near the end when Gaz Tomlinson goes all out with an impassioned, gritty vocal tirade. Things do chill out again considerably after this unexpected eruption, but the final track, ‘Supergirl’ is a clear standout. Drawing together all of the elements of the band’s sound into a stealthy, string-augmented package of bittersweet soul, its sparse melodies providing an evocative and alluring pull.
