Review: 'ANN, JENNIFER'
'Take Me Home EP'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '1st December 2017'

Our Rating:
Although now based in England, this classically trained pianist sings longingly of the lakes and woodland of rural Minnesota where she was born and raised.

The first of the five gently melodic songs on her debut EP is the title track and in the second she dreams of a Lighthouse helping to "guide me home". I don't think she's looking for directions to her flat in London!

Fantasy is also about the States and presents the view (which I wouldn't quibble with) that an imaginary world is preferable to the hideous reality of Trump's America.

Girl On The Train is the only song which is obviously based on her experience of living in the capital (and nothing to do with the Paula Hawkins bestseller of this name). It tells of tube encounter with a tearful woman who everyone else in the carriage was doing their level best to ignore. Ann was more emphatic and sings "something about her I see inside of me".

The record ends with the gooily romantic Let Me Love You.

Throughout, Ann exhibits the kind of pure vocals that frequently get labelled as 'angelic'. The universal appeal of such a voice has not been lost on advertisers. She has created music for the TV ads of Boots, Pampers, UNICEF and Lloyds Bank; the bank featured her version of Tears For Fears' 'Mad World'.

This public attention has led to her doing covers by request on her Facebook page. If you do an online search you'll find her performing songs by bands such as Jefferson Airplane, Queen and Duran Duran.

Whatever she is singing, from Linkin' Park to Justin Bieber, the songs exude a bland niceness that I find impossible to hate but hard to truly love.
