Review: 'BURCH, ANNA'
'Quit The Curse'

-  Label: 'Heavenly Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '2nd March 2018'

Our Rating:
“To me this album marks the end of an era of uncertainty" says Detroit's Anna Burch of her debut release.

Her autobiographical songs of emotional struggles come with an Indie jangle and strong echoes of sixties pop.

Burch is a young woman who carries some baggage but doesn't want to come across as too needy. She resists being branded as cursed in the title track and states "I won't play the victim" to the imagined recipient of What I Want.

The nine tunes were brought to fruition by engineer Collin Dupuis who has also worked with Lana Del Rey and Angel Olsen. Despite covering some darker themes like unrequited love, rivalry and regret. Dupuis gives the tracks a luminous clarity.

By the end we can identify Burch as vulnerable and perhaps even a little paranoid. But whatever her failings, we can empathise with her determination not to settle for second best. "I know it's better than before so why do I need more?" she asks on the closing track, With You Every Day. It's a rhetorical question.
