'The Folk Remedy'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '2nd March 2018'

Our Rating:
This Manchester-based folk trio, comprises Matt Whoriskey, Maria Bonner and Rob Ryle.

Singer, songwriter Whoriskey and violinist Bonner are both from Derry and, while their Irish roots are evident, he's an admirer of Ryan Adams and Conor Oberst while she lists Elbow as one of her favourite bands.

Although they formed in England in 2012, Ryle is the only English member. He's the lead guitarist with four main musical heroes: John Squire, Pete Townshend, Graham Coxon and Johnny Marr. Since the tunes are mainly quietly acoustic and introspective, he doesn't have much scope to emulate such artists.

The US and UK influences feed into a warm-hearted mix of engaging tunes. Thus we find traditional folk music with a recognizable Indie twist. The lure of Americana shines bright on New York Skyline while the breezy Jack And Mac show they have an ear for a catchy tune.

It's pleasant enough but also slightly anonymous so it left me with the feeling is that the band need a stronger identity for the remedy to prove truly effective.
