'Sunday Best'

-  Label: 'Turnstile Music'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '9th March 2018'

Our Rating:
"Class song writing with a dream pop sheen" is Ffion's own description and it's one that perfectly sums up her fine debut album.

It was written in Glasgow following Ffion's move from small-town Ireland, and recorded there with her full live (all male) band by Jamie Savage.

The ten tunes are short and sweet with seven lasting less than three minutes. This economy, together with the delicate simplicity of the sound, add to the 60s pop feel.

Details like a glass of milk and a “half smoked pack of Lucky Strike” in the opening track (Missing You) conjure up a picture of innocent high school crushes and mild rebellion in a less complicated age.

If the nerdy naivety is fake, the purity of her voice means that she carries it off with a straight face.

The Scottish climate tends to be harsh but the summery style of tracks like Beach and Baltimore transcend the surroundings and remind me of American girl groups like Best Coast or The Vivian Girls.

In short, a trifle twee yet disarmingly charming.
