After a brace of belting albums in 2015 and 2016, it’s not journo hyperbole to say that there’s a certain amount of anticipation for their third. Meanwhile, ‘Sleep’ lands as their first new material in two years, the single prefacing an EP, ‘Be Well’. As is now War Waves’ trademark, ‘Sleep’ is dressed as a solid mid-tempo indie tune, with all the trappings of quintessential 80s guitar jangle, but carries a lyrical edge that’s as sharp as a blade. While they hail from Ipswich, their closest links are to the strain of Scottish bands represented by Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad.

Marc Newby’s heart isn’t so much on his sleeve as smeared, streaming blood, all the way up his arm. ‘I’m pretty fucking sure that I can’t save you’ he sings in the mid-section, and there’s a pervasive bleakness that can’ fail to probe the deeper recesses of the soul. This is what it is to feel…
