Review: 'Ashby, Tommy'
'Restless Love (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '20th July 2018'

Our Rating:
Tommy Ashby – that’s Dr Tommy Ashby to you (he has a PhD in music focussed on studying and modelling the human perception of sound) – recently found himself playing to an audience of 200,000 at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, as guitarist with Jamie Lawson who is currently opening for Ed Sheeran.

‘Restless Love’, his second EP as a solo artist, probably won’t have quite the same audience reach, although there are signs of serious potential here. Recorded in 4 days – with 2 of the tracks remaining as rough demos – it has a certain immediacy and an undeniable commercial appeal. Predominantly acoustic guitar and vocal, the songs blend an array of soulful, folksy influences to portray a simple singer-songwriterliness and a breezy accessibility. But equally, there’s a lot of subtle detail in the mix here, with layers of harmony wafting in the background, and more than just looped vocals, too.
