Review: 'MARK SPRINGER'
'Diving'

-  Label: 'Exit Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '25th May 2018'-  Catalogue No: 'Exit 017'

Our Rating:
All ten of the solo piano pieces on this album are location specific in that the ex-founder member of 'Rip, Rig & Panic' seeks to "reflect the atmosphere of each particular room and even the spirit of the city or country in which the performances take place"

The venues are historic buildings in Italy and England. In Italy the compositions are from Teatro Castagnoli Di Scansano; Castello Di Poentino and Dom La Cupola Del Pilastro in Bologna. The remaining four pieces were recorded in England at St George's Church, Brandon Hill in Bristol, Wyastone Leys, Herefordshire and Tincleton Gallery in Dorset.

The track lengths range from 2:09 to 12:39, composed in real time and presumably comprising highlights from each performance. The diving metaphor is drawn from a 1968 movie 'The Swimmer' starring Burt Lancaster in which the protagonist "immerses himself into different scenarios by diving into various pools".

Although they are recorded live, the audience applause has been edited out and if your idea of improvised music is that of atonal dissonance then prepare to be pleasantly surprised by these flowing works which elegantly satisfy the objective of being "conversations in sound".
