Our Rating:
Fuck. I have a cold. It won’t kill me, but irritatingly, it’s not manifesting as a sore throat or runny or blocked nose, and nor am I sneezing all over the place. No, it’ssettled in my ears, and everything sounds like I’ve got cotton wool in my lugs

Still, I reckon I’m still able to know decent music when I hear it, even if it is a bit muffled, and Cardiff-based purveyors of psych-hued shoegaze Perfect Body offer up something more than decent on their debut release, which they share with Zac White.

Citing ‘the sonic experimentation of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre’ as leading influences, the three tracks on offer here plug away at simple, repetitive chord sequences to hypnotic effect. The guitars – awash with effects to create broad, washing swathes of shimmering sound – and vocals – with three singers all offering different tones to forge rich, layered harmonies, smoothed by reverb – combine to create a spiralling kaleidoscopic curtain of sound.

Zac’s efforts are messier, more manged, trippier, and are also quite the groove. The two sets compliment one another nicely, and make for a good ad for the Cardiff scene. Who knew?
