Review: 'VIGNAL, RAOUL'
'Oak Leaf'

-  Label: 'Talitres'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '11th January 2019'

Our Rating:
This French singer-songwriter sings gentle, melancholy songs very much in the style of Nick Drake.

The hushed, half-whispered vocals (sung in English) and delicate finger-picking could be regarded as engagingly intimate or excessively soporific depending on your mood.

Whatever, the dreamy tone doesn't vary a great deal over the ten tunes to the extent that it's hard to pick out any highlights or even to understand what any of the songs is about.

This kind of studied restraint could be construed as creepily intense but the impression I get is that there's more of a romantic intent behind the songs.

Despite the gentle bedside manner it failed to seduce me.
