Review: 'HOEY, GARY'
'Neon Highway Blues'

-  Album: 'Mascot/Provogue Group'
-  Genre: 'Blues' -  Release Date: '15th March 2019'

Our Rating:
This is a traditional blues based album with a modern feel and a strong identity which stems from the fact that it was self produced. Over a period of eighteen months Gary Hoey has crafted this album and not settled on a track being finished until he was perfectly happy with it. Something of the perfectionist I think.

He was notably influenced by the Kings BB, Freddie and Albert and also Burger King! The album opens with the funky "Under The Rug" featuring Eric Gales followed by the slow blues of "Mercy Of Love" with Josh Smith wherein gnarly solos get traded.

"Still Believe In Love" swings hard and has a lovely live feel too it. You can imagine hearing it walking into some blues bar in Texas and the whole place would be rocking and his vocals suit the track well.

There are three instrumental tracks on the album of which my favourite is the album closer and title track "Neon Highway Blues" which could easily be way longer and hopefully would be in a live setting. It could soundtrack any journey, imagined or taken. "I Felt Alive". meanwhile, is a riff monster and more rock than blues but it stays the right side of bombastic due to the level of control exhibited in the playing.

All-in-all this is a tightly controlled set from a modern day maestro.
