Review: 'Arcelia'
'Pick up the Pieces (EP)'

-  Label: 'How Now Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '12th July 2019'

Our Rating:
Well, Arcelia’s lineup certainly have some interesting credits between them. Simon Foster (vocals, cajon, keys) is a former Flying Picket; Gavin Alexander (vocals, guitar) co-wrote the theme tune to animated TV series ‘Ronja the Robber’s Daughter’, and Teresa Gallagher (vocals) is the voice of Dashi on the UK rendering of ‘Octonauts’ as well as characters in ‘Cars 2’, ‘Thomas & Friends’ and ‘Thunderbirds’.

Their latest EP, recorded in their own studio in a 150-year-old barn in Kent, features 4 original numbers and a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Blackbird’.

We’re in laid-back country-laced folk territory here. It’s pleasant, gentle, and the much-vaunted vocal melodies are indeed sweet, closely-knit and exquisitely executed. In terms of musicality and technical execution, ‘Pick up the Pieces’ is faultless, and no doubt the acapella rendition of ‘Blackbird’ will be a focal point.

It’s a bit twee for me, and there’s not much excitement to counter the mellowness, which has elements of blues and jazz spun into the R2-friendly blend, which is smooth but unchallenging. But I’m difficult, and there are a lot of people who crave smooth, unchallenging, melodic, and they’re going to be well into this.
