The PR tells me that ‘Watford based alternative, indie, emo sextet LAKES are delighted to share plans of their debut album ‘The Constance LP’ to be released 2nd August 2019’. They may be delighted – of course they are – but how do I feel about having this debut album delivered to me, not as a fan, but as a critic? I won’t lie: I can’t say I’m especially enthused.
There are some nice, chiming post-rock moments and some smooth yet propulsive pop passages that appeal, balancing solidity and fragility. But overall, this is lightweight, flimsy shit that says nothing of any real magnitude.
According to the press release, ‘LAKES have been emboldened with a DIY attitude that was born from frustration of life on the peripheries of a capital city. Taking influence from mid-western emo, math rock and alternative indie, the group's independent attitude has led them to record all their own music, produce their own music videos and with families of their own - organise child-friendly matinee gigs in their hometown’.

It’s promising on paper, but I reality it’s sonic wallpaper and mental chewing gum wrapped into one nondescript, favourless ball of bland.
