Our Rating:
This is the latest installment in Emotional Response Records Typical Girls compilation series and it contains 16 songs from 16 girl bands from 7 countries around the world none of whom I know anything about so everything is taken on what I think of the music. I have reviewed this in the order it downloaded and played that may not be the running order as intended or that you get on the vinyl.

The album opens with Ella's Fate by Child's Pose a rattling indie clatterer with vocals almost buried under the music so you need to hear it a few times to really get the vocals.

Next up is Anybody's Girl by Color TV that's a prime slice of punk pop with plenty of attitude like a modern updated Pandoras this is great fun and also has echoes of the Missing Persons.

We then get Classic Beat by Drama who have more of a Riot Grrl angsty Cay meets Hole with a good helping of Bikini Kill thrown in dense dark and twisted in the best lo-fi ways.

Then the mood changes for Mooncake by Empat Lima who bring more of a no wave twist to things with echoes of Bush Tetra's clashing with Disco Clone but not as detached as that it will be great for some dislocation dancing.

Where is the Dog asks Helen Barbier well it's in a no wave etiolated neighbourhood of Taxi Girl and Stinky Toys and other French new wave bands even though she's Canadian I love the weird synth sound that underpins the chorus and a large part of the song very cool.

Chemnitz by The Inserts has a real Poison Girls feel to it and while my grasp of German isn't brilliant, I'm pretty sure they are singing about the concentration camp and it has a good militant anarcho punk sound to it. I'd love to see this lot playing at Rebellion as they'd go down well.

Tiny Steps by Kamala And The Karnivores isn't as meaty as the name suggests starting off quiet before building into a power pop punk anthem that hints at Arson Garden hanging out with Poe and seeing what happens they sound like they might have a good crazy attitude too.

Latitude have a Dead End Attitude full of cheap keyboards and a real early 80's sound like they listen to a lot of Altered Images songs that weren't singles while dreaming of having hits like Madonna more upbeat than I expected it to be.

Accidente by Linda Guilala comes on like a long lost Jesus & Mary Chain single with guest vocals from Miki from Lush and yes it has that Lush like gauze to it while sounding like she's heard a lot of Holy Cobra Records output in her native Spain this has a mighty great sound that needs to be heard at crushing volume.

Mr Wrong are suffering from Overstimulation/White Male Teacher feels like Blood And Roses meets any number of other Hackney anarcho groups of the early 80's as they let us know just what's wrong with that teacher a great slice of teen angst.

Patsys Rats join the current vogue for Rat bands alongside Lucy & The Rats and Rat Fancy et al and are musically in the same scene on Looking At YR Phone as they update The Heartbreakers Get Off The Phone for the current indie powerpop generation this is an anthem for generation glued to their phones.

Slag Queens sadly don't quite live up to the band's name on Waterfall as I thought they'd be sleazy glam punk and the synth punk with a slight nod to Siouxie Sioux with jittery guitars while a really cool sounding song still feels it comes from a band with a different name even when they get to the angry bit that's a bit Skinny Girl Diet.

Motor Bitches by Snob is the sort of full on Biker metal Oi punk rampage you might expect not as angry as Grippers but with that sort of intensity with a nod to Lost Cherees a great clattering blast.

Table Sugar puts us To The Test with some low fi synth pop like they might know who Anomy was the simplicity of the music marries well with the odd whistling noises and vocals that sound like they are being sung in a really echoey room.

Vital Idles have stolen their song title from Suicide as Dream Baby Dream will always be there's but this takes off in an altogether more liminal way with a taut riff and lyrics that recall Meatjoy or the less hectoring end of Nina Hagen's lyrics. This is full of ideas and I hope they have a lot more stuff to explore.

Bad Habits Die by Whip is good and angry and sounds a bit like Maid Of Ace and is borderline skinhead oi punk meets Seven Year bitch style riot Grrl a good short blast.
